About the Book

Foreign language dictionaries give meanings of verbs and prepositions, but they do not tell the reader how to use them very well. That is what this dictionary does. It furnishes the user three items: (1) most of the syntactical constructions that a verb or a preposition allows, (2) sample sentences both in Spanish and English of each verb’s possible usages, and (3) each verb’s conjugations, so that those wanting to know how to conjugate a verb do not have to go to another source to look up its conjugations. (It should be noted that the definition of a preposition is expanded here to include many words that traditionally have been called “adverbs.”) It can be a very useful tool for students learning Spanish to help them put together sentences. It can also be very helpful for Spanish teachers and linguists to learn of a very creative way to explain syntax.

About the Author

Professor Eldredge has taught beginner, intermediate, and advanced linguistics, literature, and folklore Spanish classes for about forty-five years. For his doctorate, he studied Spanish linguistics for his major, and literature and folklore classes for his minors. He has taught in many schools including UCLA, Universidad lberoamericana, and University of Redlands. He has a great love for linguistics. Professor Mayea-Rodriguez, a Cuban by birth, received his doctorate from UCR, and he currently teaches at the University of Redlands. He teaches advanced grammar and medieval literature Spanish courses. A few years ago, he became very fascinated with linguistics and began working with Professor Eldredge to write books. He enjoyed very much this project of developing this dictionary. This is the third book Professors Eldredge and Mayea have written. The other two are Teaching Spanish, My Way and Introduction to Spanish/English Linguistics.
