About the Book
This graphic novel is based on the life of Abraham Lincoln, and it follows his life from his childhood to his presidency to his untimely death. From his early childhood, Abraham Lincoln was a person who loved reading, and he loved reading about history. His favorite president was George Washington, our first president. His rocky childhood and his relationship with his father are some points I emphasized in his childhood years, also his view on religion. When he lost his mother to illness, this hit him very hard, and the sadness stayed with him. This book also focuses on the hidden world that we never see, the spiritual world, where, throughout Abe’s life, he had a war going on around him. He was fighting for his very soul. Throughout Abe’s life, he had battled melancholy, and using demons and angels is one way of illustrating how the supernatural can affect our lives. His love for women caused him many problems. Losing his first love, Ann Rutledge, was his first episode with melancholy. Then when he met his wife-to-be, Mary Todd, and could not commit, this was his second episode, but strangely enough, these episodes were worse than when he lost two of his children later in life. Perhaps this was a way the otherworldly spirits or God or the universe was preparing him to be the president and to be a leader in the worst war in our history as a nation. The book ends with Lincoln becoming president, and this sets the stage for book 2.
About the Author
I was born in Hettinger, North Dakota in May 3, 1974, to Orville Evjen Sr. and Janet Bravecrow Evjen. At the age of 18 I lost both of my parents to an alcohol related accident. And have been living in Turtle Lake, North Dakota since. I grew up in western South Dakota and near the standing rock Sioux reservation. My mother was a member and was Sioux, my father was the grandson of a Norwegian immigrant who came here in the 1840’s. My grandfather Ole Evjen was born one hundred years before I was in 1874. He and his family moved from Turtle Lake, ND to his brother’s homestead after his death, in Sd. Where they lived until my father and mothers passing in 1992. I have one brother, Pernell and half-sister Paula who live in ND also. I have always loved history and the world of comic books, I practiced drawing comic art from the time I was six and by the time I was thirty I created a graphic novel on Lewis, Clark and Sakakawea. I am Christian and am very patriotic as I had 4 uncles that were in World War 2. I try to instill those values into my story telling and artwork.
