CYBERMAN

For most people in life, moving to a new country or a new home in general or just moving forward with one’s life is a time of celebration and joy. As the late Walt Disney once said, “We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” Yet in author David Israel Uquillas Alonso’s sci-fi novel CYBERMAN, a young scientist finds his new move with his fiancée to Mexico City turning into a mission of revenge and justice.

In this novel, scientist David Connor moves to Mexico City with his fiancée Kathleen Troy, hoping to discover new possibilities and begin a life for themselves in the culture rich city. However when they are robbed in the public transport, David goes on a mission to experiment and develop cutting edge technology that will allow him to transport throughout the internet to recover what was stolen from him. This leads to a mission of revenge in an effort to teach the bandits a lesson they won’t soon forget.

This book moves at lightning speed as far as pace is concerned. The author does a great job of establishing the characters early and diving head first into the inciting incident. As the novel progresses and the story evolves into the sci-fi and action/thriller sequences, what really stands out is the heart of this story, and that is a soon to be husband and man who feels victimized and defeated, and goes to extreme lengths to regain his self-worth and his pride.

Fans of the science fiction genre and the thriller genre will absolutely love this story. As a fan of both genres, I was immediately transported and wowed by the story. The author not only does a great job of jumping into the sci-fi/thriller aspect of the novel, but does a great job of showcasing the character study of not only David but Kathleen as well, as readers will see the affect the inciting incident has on both their lives. On a mission to return his and his wife’s feeling of being secure and unexposed, David pushes the limits and goes to extreme lengths to utilize a new technology and puts himself in more danger than he could have ever imagined.

This is a fast paced, action packed read that showcases the development of a scifi/thriller based vigilante tale like no other. The quick transition of protagonist Dave into the being known as Cyberman is a fun, action driven narrative that readers will not be disappointed with. The novel’s plot has a satisfying ending with a few twists and turns that may shock readers, and will leave them wanting more of Cyberman. David Connor and his fiancée Kate have just moved from Los Angeles to Mexico City. She is a successful theatre producer, while his work involves laboratory science. An event on the public transport in their new city, in which David is robbed of his cell phone—including accompanying intimate photographs of Kate, which are then broadcast via the Internet—will change his life and mission forever.

Throughout the ensuing narrative, the scientist and technology genius invents a way to “tele-transport” through space, using manipulation of the algorithms of the World Wide Web. In addition to his space-travel endeavors, David also invents a series of “payback” fake cell phones which, when stolen on the busy transport stations throughout Mexico City, leave the unsuspecting thieves with a bang of a surprise. Their fingers are blown to bits, and a permanent red-ink tattoo is encased on their body which reads “Cell Phone Thief.” The protagonist, in fact, becomes somewhat maniacal as he reaps so much addictive satisfaction and pleasure from punishing his would-be thieves with his homemade devices.

Uquillas’s novel is a fast-paced adventure, full of surprises, sci-fi overtones, action, and psychological head-on collisions. There’s also much for romance fans—sensual scenes depicted between the two main lovers, including the time they teleport to romantic Sydney, Australia. One could easily imagine this book as fodder for a future thriller movie, as it lends itself precisely to what is often successful on the big screen. Very much like a self-built superhero, over time and with technological perfections David becomes Cyberman, an alternate persona seeking revenge from street thieves. Uquillas’s enthralling narrative packs more than a punch and delivers high-end literary excitement.
