Office of the Iranian President, Teheran. Late March, 2019 At the knock on his door, the President waved his secretary and right hand man, Farhad , to a seat in his office and handed him a glass of good French brandy from a bottle he secretly kept in his desk, away from the prying eyes of the clerics. “OK, let's have it Farhad” said the President. “What have your sources told you about this secret Israeli weapon, this so-called MWG?” He had full faith in the accuracy of Farhad's reports. Farhad took a sip of the brandy, savouring the scent and taste of it. “Well, Sir, it's an interesting situation we have seen developing” he said. “As you know, the supply chain of machinery and equipment to build more missile bases in Syria has sped up massively, largely through being smuggled into Syria under so called humanitarian guises of supplying relief to Syrian civilians. I have been told that the missiles are about to be shipped there in the same way, now that the bases are ready for them. You know of course that the rate of build-up has increased because our military chiefs claim they have been alerted to the possibility that the MWG actually exists and threatens the war plans of the Ayatollahs? You'll also know from my previous reports that thousands of IRGC guards have also been stationed in Lebanon and Gaza to help with road blocks, for the purpose of detecting and capturing any Israeli vehicles which may be transporting the MWGs to target sites with the missile bases. ” He paused, taking another sip of brandy. “Meanwhile, our satellite surveillance has been very carefully monitored to detect any testing of these new MWGs in Israel, especially the Negev desert where they do most of their weapon research and testing. If they have been tested and are ready for deployment and operation, then the satellite surveillance should be detecting unusual movement of vehicles into the remote areas of Syria, where most of the launch bases are situated. So, with all this surveillance and checking, we were guaranteed to have found evidence that this weapon does indeed exist.” “Well?” asked the President impatiently. “Is there any evidence? Has this huge cost to our national coffers been warranted to overcome the alleged damage these so- called MWGs can do to our missile arsenal for launching a massive strike against Israel?” He spoke with a heavy cynicism - all along he'd doubted the existence of this so- called MWG. “A weapon with the capacity to disable guided missiles? It beggars belief, even if the Israelis do have such advanced defence technologies!” he thought. “Well, here's the thing” said Farhad, swallowing more brandy, anticipating his boss's reaction to his report. “There is no evidence of this MWG weapon! Not from the satellite pictures of the military testing sites in the Negev, not from the satellite pictures over Syria, not from the vehicle searches in Lebanon and Gaza, nothing!” “So there isn't a shred of evidence that this MWG actually exists?” persisted the President. “Nothing!” repeated Farhad. “Well, well, well,” breathed the President. “Here we are, weeks after the meeting we had about the alleged existence of this secret weapon and not a word from the military that they have not found the evidence we requested! We must confront them with this! It might just be what we need to get this insane operation scaled back and free up what remains of our desperately needed development funds.” However, the President still felt somewhat confused. Was this all a trumped up story, misinformation fed to the Iranian decision makers, the Ayatollahs, by the military themselves, to justify their use of more of Iran's scarce financial resources to boost their attack power and bring the date of attack forward? But if that was the case, why all the road blocks, the searches, the satellite surveillance if there wasn't a genuine concern that the MWG was real? On the other hand, if there was no evidence of the MWG, why the continued massive and rapid build- up of the missile arsenal? “Sir, I think it's too late “ said Farhad, sombrely. “The date of attack is now a matter of weeks away! I'm told there is to be a meeting within the next two weeks of the military chiefs of Iran, Lebanon, Gaza and Syria to set a date for the launch of the missile strike on Israel by mid- April! I very much doubt we can turn back this tsunami of war bearing headlong towards Israel now”. “ I see” said the President. Gone was the cynicism and ire, now what Farhad saw in his eyes was a growing fear and alarm. “We can expect of course that Israeli intelligence has picked up on these developments and Israel is now fully alert to the prospects of a full scale attack in a few weeks. You realise the consequences, Farhad? “ “My sources also tell me “Farhad pressed on grimly “that for the first time ever, the Americans are preparing to provide naval, air and ground troop support to Israel in the event of war. I understand Saudi Arabia and the UAE have also offered air support!” He then nodded in acknowledgement of the President's challenging question. Yes, Sir, it means we're facing an all-out, brutal conflagration in Israel, Lebanon, Gaza, Syria and Iran itself where no holds are barred, civilian deaths are “collateral damage” and Iran might well expect strikes from Israel's nuclear arsenal! I'm also told” he continued, gravely “that the Russians will probably pull out, rather than get caught in the crossfire, leaving Syria to collapse into anarchy!” The President closed his eyes for a moment then opened them to gaze at Farhad. “I presume this is all known to the Supreme Leader and the military chiefs! Yet they are implacably bent on this path of destruction because they believe that even if Israel does put some of the missile bases out of action they can still succeed in destroying Israel with the massive fire power of our missiles!” “Exactly so, Sir,” said Farhad, his eyes shining with tears as his emotions finally rose to the surface. “This is a war which should not happen! Yet we are powerless to stop it!” There was a long silence. The President stirred, reaching for his bottle. “I think this calls for more brandy, Farhad.”

‘Israel is in a tough neighbourhood.’ That is the wry saying of Israelis who live in this tiny strip of land in the Middle East, the nation state of the Jews but a true democracy with an independent judiciary and press freedom which allows religious freedom to all citizens—Jews, Christians, and Muslims, among others. It is a country which passionately desires peace with its neighbours and seeks to establish international trading and humanitarian and cultural ties, sharing the many advanced technologies it has developed in the fields of agriculture, science, IT, and medicine. Yet it is surrounded by countries ideologically driven and fanatically dedicated to its total destruction, especially the annihilation of the Jews. The country posing the greatest threat to Israel is Iran, which is establishing huge arsenals of guided missiles in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza while arming and training huge proxy armies of known terrorist organisations, such as Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in Gaza, and Islamic jihadists in Syria. Their plan is to attack Israel in a pincer movement with hundreds of thousands of guided missiles fired from Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza, inflicting death and destruction to such an extent that it severely weakens Israel’s powerful defence systems and allows a massive invasion of ground troops to conquer Israel and ethnically cleanse the country of its Jews and Christians. The Iranians and their proxy armies know that the missile strike is essential to winning this war because without it, Israel has the capacity to crush the ground troop invasion. This unfolding situation now poses imminent disaster for Israel if they cannot neutralise this threat of missile attack. But Israel has a secret weapon which can disable missiles, and it must do so without the knowledge of the enemy. The challenge now is how to deploy their new weapon without its detection and capture in enemy territory because the Iranians have been alerted to its possible existence and are doing everything possible to overcome this threat to their arsenal. The attack date is now brought forward to a matter of weeks away. Israel needs a miracle to win through before then. Then from an unlikely source comes a secret device which could protect the new weapon from detection, but it’s now a race against time to test it and still succeed at disabling the entire missile arsenal threatening Israel before the missiles are launched in the first phase of the Iranians’ attack plan. The unfolding drama plays out not just in the field of battle but also in a secret laboratory in an Australian outback town and in the boardrooms of the leaders and the chief military advisors of Iran, Israel, the United States, and Russia. Can Israel be saved from the imminent threat of total destruction from a determined and fanatical enemy?
About the Author
Ionah is no stranger to war and the life of an exile. Born and brought up in Rhodesia, she lived through fifteen years, including seven years of married life on a farm, beset by civil war. Her husband was more out on bush patrol than he was at home, while Ionah, a dairy farm consultant, had to travel round the country with an Uzi gun by her side in case of ambush, and the windows of their farmhouse were covered with anti-grenade screens. At independence, in the new Zimbabwe, she gained a doctorate in animal science and joined the local university as a lecturer and researcher while assisting her husband in running their farm. But after a few years, Zimbabwe descended into chaos, and they were forced to leave their farm and country and move to New Zealand. Then they moved to Australia. They are now happily settled in the beautiful state of Tasmania. Ionah has always felt empathy for the Jewish people, who were forced into exile for two thousand years, suffering great persecution, the worst being the Holocaust in the Second World War. She understands how much it means to have their homeland, Israel, returned to them and why they fight so fiercely and effectively against constant attacks by hostile neighbours and terrorists. ‘I’ve met Israelis and worked on research projects with them, and I know how much they wish for peace with their neighbours,’ she says, ‘but it’s not reciprocated, and the threat of war always hangs over them. I found myself wondering, “What would it take to prevent war and ensure a lasting peace?”’ From that was born her idea for the novel Weapons of Mass Disablement. The politics of the Middle East are very complex but fascinating, and it took a great deal of research and reading to ensure the context of the plot was as authentic as possible. The weapons of disablement, while science fiction now, are based on technology that may well become reality in the not-too-distant future.
