Alienation and Literature

About the Book

“Alienation and Literature” is concerned with the problem of change in the society and how it is perceived by the West African writer. It aims to define and identify the various facets of alienation and demonstrate how they are manifested in the lives of people and in the imagination of creative writers. Critics of modern West African literature have concentrated their efforts on the cultural and political aspects of alienation. This is an attempt to analyze in addition, physical and economic alienation, how they have resulted in the growth or otherwise of the creative writer in particular and the society in general.

About the Author

William Dikedi Onyebuchim Nwaegbe (alias W.D.O) was born in Nigeria in 1936. From primary school he gained admission to the prestigious Kings College Lagos for his secondary education. He obtained his Bachelors and Master’s Degree in English from University College Ibadan. In 1972 he was employed by the University of Nigeria Nsukka, there he obtained his PhD in 1985. This book is an adaptation of that PhD thesis which won the Vice Chancellors award for best PhD dissertation for the year. William retired to his home state Delta, in May, 2001. He is married with four children.
