As a man of seventy-four, Josias applied for and received a pension of $46.66 per year for his service in the Revolutionary War. His memory was excellent; he was able to recount details of scouting and ranging activities of his militia companies. Josias and Mary died in Rutherford County, Tennessee. They were buried in the Canon Cemetery, now surrounded on three sides by the Percy Priest Lake. In his will, in addition to bequests to his wife and children, he left $5.00 to Princeton College and $5.00 to the Bible Society. It has often been written that the numerous Scots-Irish militiamen and Continental soldiers contributed overwhelmingly to the American victory in the war for independence from Britain. Surely, Josias Martin expressed those characteristics of courage, conviction and persistence that prevailed over the British Army and their sympathizers.

Searching for and writing about the lives of her ancestors has become a passion for author Karen Cox Gray. She has visited France, Switzerland, Belgium and the United Kingdom following the paths of her family roots. In the United States, she has traveled throughout the Eastern states and the Midwest researching the basis of family legends. After a career as an Illinois regional library consultant, Karen compiles her research and writes stories from her home in central Illinois. She is the author of seven previous books. Artist Meghan Cox Meghan Cox is an artist working in Philadelphia. She has exhibited work regionally, nationally and internationally. She is also the recipient of several grants including the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant. Meghan currently teaches painting and figure drawing at Drexel University.
