About the Book

This is the story of Nathan Hale, the twenty-one-year old soldier who was hung as a spy by the British in the first year of the American Revolution. This brings to life his boyhood and his college life at Yale. These were the years of uncertainty before the Declaration of Independence was written, when everyone who lived in Britain’s American Colonies had to make the difficult choice between living under the increasingly abusive Crown rule, or fighting against what seemed at the time to be hopeless odds in order to become an independent country. He finds time for romance with a serving girl, Daphne, who, though illiterate and marred with a facial scar, wins his love with an open charm that even the reader will be unable to resist. As a Ranger in Washington’s most elite outfit, Nat fights in several skirmishes and battles before volunteering for a dangerous assignment. He is betrayed by a relative, but accepts his tragic fate with a gallantry that has inspired Americans ever since.
