In 1980, Iran engaged neighboring Iraq in a devastating border war which lasted eight years and killed over one million soldiers. This conflict raged simultaneously with Iran´s Islamic revolution, a double burden for the soldiers and families of Iran.

Mullah Haji Hasan, an ardent follower of Iran´s revolutionary leader, the Ayatollah Khomeini, recruits village boys to run across Iraqi mine fields, These ´martyrs´ sacrifice their lives so Iranian soldiers who follow will not die. One of the boys, thirteen-year-old Reza, volunteers in order to clear the slander against his father´s name. Haji Hasan, stunned by the carnage he witnesses, and challenged in a dream by the angel Gabriel, knows he must act.

About the Author

During the years 1949 through 1964, the author worked as a physician and surgeon in two church affiliated Christian Hospitals in Iran. Five years were in the Shrine City of Meshed, close to the Afghanistan/Russian border, and ten years in the ancient city of Ecbatana, now called Hamadan, close to the Iraq border. Many hours were spent serving villagers suffering from a variety of harsh medical and surgical problems. Living in Iran provided a rich, unforgettable professional experience for both the author and his wife, a nurse. For their six children, it was a rare opportunity to learn a foreign language [Persian] and grow up with children of a different culture.
