About the Book

A middle school student, Macabee McCoy, discovers strange happenings at the abandoned missile factory behind her new home at the edge of the Florida Everglades. She is horrified that the activities going on are putting the alligators, birds, snakes and all the rest of the marsh in death’s way. Macabee’s intense respect and love for the natural world drives her determination in trying to save the creatures on her own. These efforts are hampered by her reading disability as she struggles for solutions. This is the story of Macabee’s adventure-filled search for the right answers.

About the Author

Elizabeth Lockridge Huls taught reading for exceptional education classes in public school that incorporated many outdoor experiences in the learning process. She also guided tours for older residents into “The Real Florida”. Her degrees are in English/Creative Writing from the University of Missouri, and a Master’s specializing in Specific Learning Disabilities from Florida Atlantic University. She lives on acreage complete with a cypress stand and an alligator in the back lake. Her family of husband and four children has made Florida their home for forty-two years.
