About the Book

Felicia Altman-Gilbert was born in Berlin in 1917. With vivid expressive power she tells the story of her young life, unfolding as Hitler and the Nazi Party rise to corrosive power. The daughter of a prosperous expatriate American family of the theater, Altman-Gilbert sensitively evokes her childhood in Berlin and Hanover, and recalls a desertion by her youthful friends and betrayal by a country she believes to be her own. Altman-Gilbert transports us from Germany to Switzerland, England, France and on a Mediterranean cruise, finally to America, a journey from the Third Reich to a safe but startling new world.

About the Author

Felicia Altman Gilbert lives in Atlanta with her son and his family. At 87, she can be found late into the night writing the second installment of her memoir. She reads voluminously and critically, and attends book groups and classes in history and literature. She has numerous ongoing friendships and interests, so living in the past is confined to her writing. Much has occurred since her youth in 1917 Berlin, but with her dog Freddie and her cane, Pegasus, she continues to insist that she will never be more flexible than she is now.
