The dawn of the first millennium has arrived and a group of devout Druid monks meet at Stonehenge to anoint the sacredness of the occasion. Several have experienced vivid prophetic visions. They share the substance of their divinations and make a vow accompanied by a mysterious oath. They agree to reincarnate in whatever form might stem the dangerous tide lest a dark fate befall future mankind. The story fast-forwards to the radical 1960’s where college students make Stonehenge a favored pilgrimage destination. A particular group of campers learn through impromptu conversation that each is studying some form of medicine. Friendships develop and grow over time. In synch with the dawn of the 2nd millennium, the campers, now scientists and geneticists, receive a covert invitation to attend a clandestine symposium being held in Europe. Once the attendees are assembled, they learn that the first human cloning endeavor is about to get underway, and guests are invited to participate in this extraordinary venture. On account of their ages and areas of interest, members of the audience are encouraged to act as surrogates for the anticipated clone births. All surrogates are expected to become part of a holistic community where their needs can be nurtured and monitored throughout the gestation phase. A sprawling country estate in Northern England has been donated to the cause. One demand placed on all participants is celibacy. This protocol is taken as a safety measure, a safeguard to ensure the preservation of clone embryos in their vulnerable early stages. Since it’s the goal of the clone project to effect a small living population that will be scattered around the world, clone surrogates are chosen from different regions. Interestingly enough, two are chosen from the United States. One American couple resides on the East coast and the other on the West. Luz, an impressionable young surrogate from Argentina finds herself irresistibly drawn to Jerome, a member of the project facilitation team. He distinguishes himself as something of a rebel, but also exhibits a questionable character. Against protocols he manages to seduce Luz. Their illicit tie remains a secret; unfortunately for some, so, too does the initial progress of the clones newly returned to their surrogate mothers’ lands of origin. The project directors realize the project must be kept under wraps and go to great lengths to ensure its long-term success. Initially, in spite of ostensible dangers and unexpected challenges they manage to keep concise records that check the development of the clones. However as time passes, the lead facilitator’s plane mysteriously goes down. Related events point to a dark force surreptitiously undermining the project’s ultimate purposes. Communications among clone families thereafter become scarce. The story follows the parallel tracks taken by the two twin American clones unknown to one another. By chance, the New York couple stops into San Francisco just when prescient William, their clone child, feels a sudden urge to walk down several specific streets in the big city. Against all odds, sure enough, his clone brother happens to be just then visiting San Francisco, too! The potentially awkward interaction is quickly aborted thanks to quick thinking on the part of the California clone’s surrogate mother. She does what she can to defuse the encounter by distracting Tommy, and hopes his thoughts won’t wonder back to the image of a boy that looks remarkably like him. Years pass and the clones enter into puberty. As fate would have it, Tommy ends up in a near fatal car crash that oddly works to his advantage by disfiguring his countenance. Although contacts remain rare among surrogate families, an ominous cloud seems to hover over those events they do manage to share. Once the clones cross the biological threshold into young adulthood, the story focuses on William who enrolls at N.Y.U
