About the Book
America Born is an historical novel that experiences the American Revolution through the lives of the Merrill family in Boston. Tom Merrill, the father, is a hard-working laborer with a violent past that knows the horror of war. Abigail, the family matriarch, as strong-willed as she is beautiful, just wants to keep her family together. Middle child James is a revolutionary fire-brand, hobnobbing with Sons of Liberty notables such as Sam Adams and Paul Revere. The youngest child, William, just wants to raise a family and work in his blacksmith shop. Anne, the oldest of the Merrill children, is married to a British officer. Together with her husband, Lawrence Pettigrew, they experience another side of the Revolution.
America Born shows how a family is affected by the events of the day – the same events that lead to the American Revolution. Can this family survive a civil war with England that threatens to tear the country apart? This novel shows how average people made history in such events as the battles of Lexington and Concord. The book even contains seven maps to help the reader follow the action.
While events leading up to the American Revolution and several battles of the war are covered in some detail, this is, at its core, the story of a family. America Born traces a generation of Merrills as they face birth and death, courage and cowardice, great love and terrible hatreds. Average people, doing their best to survive in tumultuous times can do extraordinary things. A rag-tag group of shopkeepers and farmers challenged the greatest super power in the world and won. The result: America Born!
