About the Book
I believe life is a precious gift from God and it should be cherished in the face of any adversity — disappointment, pain, disability and even death. Although my story is a personal one, I am hoping that it will portray to the reader that no matter what your circumstances may be, you can live a satisfying life by filling your days with my thirteen tools of recovery. By reading my book, I attempt to demonstrate how I have managed my life in spite of my many daily challenges. Nine of these thirteen tools are listed in Norman Cousins’ book on hope. Although I have known that these were strong elements of health, they were emphasized to me again through the reading of Cousins’ book. I have added four tools of recovery that have helped me immensely. I have ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), often called Lou Gehrig’s disease. There is no known cause or cure for this disease and there is no significant treatment. I was diagnosed by two neurologists in 1990 and in 2000 by a different neurologist. Statistics say that the life expectancy of one with ALS is from three to five years. This seems to indicate that we are doing something right because wow, I am still alive!
