About the Book
The story, spanning several years, unfolds through the eyes of 18-year-old Eddie, Stella Thorne’s older brother. Inspired by Marcus Whitman, the father, Culver Thorne, wants to take his family of seven out west along the Oregon Trail. Stella is the reluctant Pioneer Lady. A young but experienced pioneer, Jeff Moorfield, is persuaded to guide the family’s caravan when the captain becomes ill and dies. But a southerner named Joel Hallor is another kind of thorn who pains Jeff all the way to Oregon. Hardships, danger, humor and pathos fill this exciting story as Joel and Jeff vie for Stella’s affections.
