About the Book

Rescue Off Peanut Island is a rescue story about a nine-year-old girl named Jenna, who goes swimming in the inlet between Singer Island and Peanut Island in South Florida. She is a good swimmer who is trying out her new mask and snorkel gear in this shallow swimming and snorkeling area. One of the features of this area is a tiny sunken treasure ship. It is in four feet of water and is a safe place to have fun exploring tropical juvenile fish close to shore. Jenna is a short way from the channel where many pleasure boats pass by. The tide is high when Jenna starts her swimming and diving adventure. While she is out swimming, the weather conditions change unexpectedly. She finds herself in an outgoing tide during a sudden thunderstorm. She cannot get back to shore and is tossed around in the sea. A dolphin rescues her by swimming beneath her, lifting Jenna out of the choppy sea. A Coast Guard boat, with Jenna’s mother onboard, rescues Jenna and brings her to safety. The dolphin is the hero of the story. Jenna remains excited about her adventure and can’t wait to go snorkeling again.

About the Author

Jane Niebch, has been an educator for over twenty-five years. She has written non-fiction stories about the local history of Jupiter, Florida. Her article titled “East Coast Wrecks: Florida’s San Miguel de Archangel” about the discovery of treasure from a seventeenth century Spanish vessel was published in Skin Diver Magazine. Her article “The Rescue of Myrtle the Turtle” was the story of a rescued turtle nurtured and rehabilitated at Loggerhead Museum, Juno Beach, Florida. Jane served as a director of children’s summer programs at the Loxahatchee Historical Society where she interviewed the late Bessie DuBois, an early Florida pioneer in Jupiter. Jane’s article titled “Jupiter Pioneers Traveled by Boat” was published in South Florida History Magazine. Jane enjoys writing children’s books about the islands she has visited off the Atlantic Coast and the Gulf of Mexico. She is an avid reader about pirates and sunken treasure. Jane enjoys traveling to study historic castles, antiquities, and the homes of famous writers and composers. She enjoys playing the piano and photography. Jane lives with her husband and her dog, Dexter, in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
