Life is slow here
My thoughts run amok only to find there is nowhere to run
The plaster on the ceiling has started to crack and
It tells me that it has also tried to hold it together and failed
The days are difficult and miserable
Not because there is poverty, but because there isn’t
There is no hunger for more
There is no need for change
There is no desire for better
And there is no room for growth
My mind races on a track with the finish line behind the start
My energy is only relieved through jitters and fidgets
And my decision to leave smiles upon me in the knowledge of its non-permanence
Maybe that decision is what makes the halls obtuse
I’m unsure of the cause and result here
Either way, it is not a house for the young
The young have not claimed it
I’m sad for its tenants
They do not have a window into today
Their lives have stopped in 2010
So has this clock on the wall not moved since I have started staring at it
The city is fast-paced, they say
And yet all I see is frenzied marbles darting across a closed container
Lots of distance, no displacement
I could live here before
This place was livable
Or was it? I did leave in 2010
I haven’t looked back since
Never regretted it either
I have been proud to leave the sinking ship
Or been its iceberg, either way
It is important that this is a temporary stay
I can find a way someday maybe to find this appealing
But this is not the speed I can resign to, right now
My heart is young and my soul is on fire
Its flames need air to breathe and vast forests to blaze

I wanted to release into the wild, the emotions in me that did not belong with each other, but seemed inseparable just the same. At the core of all my poems is a sentiment waiting to be felt, so I hope you give it a chance to ripple through your core and make home in your soul. These poems encompass everything from my conversations with peace to my walks with surly poets, heavenly games to rotting crops. I hope the poems let you step out of yourself and experience the world through someone else’s emotional lens. And I hope the poem you read today is undeniably everything you ever needed from life. Just for today.
About the Author
Nefy was born and brought up in India. She was raised with ideals of perfection, excellence and math, which made perfect sense to her until she fell in love with poetry. She then found herself in two worlds. One of structures and efficiencies and the other of poetic musings and wasted days. She dedicated over two decades of her life to the first world: finished her bachelors in engineering, as an Indian of her generation is required to do by law. She, then, got a master’s in business, as is customary for a woman her age, in response to the dreaded question of marriage. However, she has now allowed herself to deviate into her second world of crazy and chaos, and this book is the result of that deviation.
