About the Book

In this volume of collected speeches and writings, the preface entitled, Nine Keys to Happiness, remains the unfinished work of Dr. John S. Madara.  A country doctor in rural Salem County for over 50 years, he healed his many patients in spirit as well as body. Active in community, church and medicine, Dr. Madara was looked to for leadership and advice on many issues. This book offers everyone a rare glimpse at the doctor's unique views on the mysteries of life, and how life should be truly lived and enjoyed. This book is a compilation of speeches, articles and letters found boxed together in a desk drawer just after his death in 1996. Published posthumously by his family, the writings span a time frame of over 30 years. Using a combination of history, medicine, religion and politics, Dr Madara was an interesting, much requested speaker, who captivated his audiences with common sense and compassion.


About the Author

Dr. John S. Madara was born on Aug. 14,1921 in Merchantville NJ. , he was a 1938 graduate of Moorestown High School. He received his bachelors degree from Temple University in 1942 , graduated from Thomas Jefferson University Medical School in 1945 and completed his internship at Cooper Hospital in Camden. A WW II veteran served as a lieutenant in the navy at the Veterans Hospital in Northport ,NY.. Dr. Madara moved to Salem NJ. in 1948, where he opened his medical practice there and became affiliated with the Salem County Memorial Hospital . Dr. Madara was the first Medical Director of the Memorial Hospital of Salem County, Medical Director of the Salem County Nursing Home, as well as past president of the Medical Society of New Jersey and the Salem County Medical Society. He served on the board of trustees of the New Jersey Hospital Assoc. and as a delegate on the American Medical Association. Dr. Madara was a charter diplomat of the American Board of Family Practice and was also on the Blue Shield Board of Trustees . Dr. Madara was also active in the community , where he was past president and member of the Rotary club. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Salem ,where he had been an elder and Adult Sunday School Teacher. Dr. Madara also hosted the weekly radio show " Doctors House Calls" on WJIC/WNNN since 1979 His many commendations included United Fund Presidents Award , recognition from the Medical Society of New Jersey for 50 years of service as a physician , and the Boy Scouts of America's "Good Scout of the Year" Award. Dr. Madara and his wife , Ruth , were also named Salem's "Citizens of the Year".
