About the Book

A wealthy couple, bored with their lives and hum-drum marriage look for a way to add some excitement to what they feel are a very  few remaining years.  The husband, Arka, raised in Turkey, feels men should be allowed mistresses and sexual freedom but that women should be demure, submissive and devoted totally to their husband’s interests and welfare.

The wife, Edie, is shocked and fearful when Arka tells her he wants to find women on the world-wide-web and then to meet them for recreational sex.  She reluctantly agrees to consider his idea but is adamant that if he does, she can.

While she reluctantly ponders Arka’s idea and Arka distastefully ponders the prospect of his wife sexually active with other men, Edie starts discussing the problem online with other people.

One of the first discussions is with a Kansas engineer and writer, Jason, who happens to be online pursuing the same idea as Arka.  She asks him his viewpoint about extramarital sex.  He is noncommittal but, when she presses the subject, admits he has been involved in some affairs and  that she should do some soul searching before committing to such a life.  He warns her, as Arka did, that affairs “from the heart” for a woman; “from the body” for a man.  She must regard them as games rather than love affairs or she will risk emotional upheaval.

In following conversations Edie questions him at length about “a man’s viewpoint”.  They become well acquainted through IM”s (instant messages) which are text conversations on America Online sent from one computer to another much like a telephone conversation.

Edie decides her problem is not so much about deciding whether to give Arka permission as it is to live with his independent decision.  She finds him pursuing females online without waiting for her to agree to it.  Angry about this, she decides to find a lover if for no other reason than vengeance.  Edie becomes more and more dependent on Jason for advice as her life becomes a tumult of indecision.  She is afraid Arka will find someone younger and more attractive; that she will lose the bond between them as a consequence.  In addition, she is morally torn between acting on her own desire for sexual variety versus remaining faithful to her husband.  As Arka tears recklessly into this new life style, Edie frustratingly makes one adaptation after the other to keep apace.

She meets other men online, discusses the problem with them but most are shallow conversations until she meets Randel, a black diplomat’s son, 35-years-old, who is married and also looking for a playmate.

She becomes more deeply acquainted with both Jason and Randel and eventually makes plans to meet  Jason for fun and games when Arka arranges to meet an online girlfriend, Jane.   She grows quite enamored of Randel but feels at first that she is too old for it to be more than a ludicrous idea for them to become sexually involved.  As time goes on she decides otherwise, but to compensate for her age, decides to undergo plastic surgery to present a younger-looking body.

Before the surgery, she arranges to spend several days with Jason in a motel “just in case anything happens to her because of the surgery that might render such a meeting impossible later”.

They awkwardly complete their first session in bed but, with familiarity, find themselves very compatible and developing affection for one another.

Both Arka and Jason are racist so as she gets more and more deeply involved with Randel she also becomes more secretive about it.  Both men know she is corresponding with him.  Her husband objects violently and, in her conversations with Jason, Jason repeatedly advises her to drop him in respect for Arka and her marriage.  But to little avail.  Edie is a very independent lady and is det
