About the Book

So Nearly A Hero is a fact-based Civil War novel about Union General George Brinton McClellan, twice picked by President Lincoln to lead the nation’s largest army against victorious Confederates. McClellan finds himself fighting on two fronts. He is mostly successful in battling intrigues within Lincoln’s cabinet but he loses his nerve when poised on the brink of two decisive victories against the South. Real and fictional characters, including two of McClellan’s staff officers and a female Southern spy, are involved in the general’s brief, tumultuous career, from his appointments to high military rank, to his humiliations and dismissals.
