About the Book

A Catholic priest is butchered outside his own church on a cold, rainy night, and so begins a series of crimes that will plague the Los Angeles area for several weeks. In each instance, another Catholic priest is murdered, yet each crime seemingly is not connected with the others. While the elite Special Investigations Unit of the LAPD is inexplicably brought in to handle what are officially declared to be random acts of violence, newspaper reporter Rachel Chapman believes otherwise. Toiling away at the second-rate Los Angeles Tribune, and with designs on a more prestigious job at the world-renowned Los Angeles Herald, Rachel begins investigating each of the crimes with an eye toward a possible connection. At the same time Rachel must fight her way through seas of red tape and mysteriously uncooperative police and Church officials, Rachel is also coming to grips with her own questions regarding her sexuality and feelings she has for her attractive new partner and photographer, Beth Gilmour. The investigation leads Rachel from some of the wealthiest enclaves in Brentwood and Beverly Hills to some of the poorest sections of south-central and east L.A. to the dusty back streets of Tijuana and back again, all in the midst of a freakish cold wave that has descended on the southern California area. During the course of her journey, Rachel discovers some insights into her personal life, as well as the gruesome facts about the crimes being committed. Only when she finds her life on the line does she unearth the final, horrible truth.
