About the Book

Growing up in a working class family, Jimmy VanChocstra experiences loneliness, fear, and wanting. As he gets older and learns more about his world—school, sports, religion, work, class—he begins to see it all as a swindle, but he plays his part in it, hoping to fill the emptiness he feels with money, toys, tobacco, and alcohol. His true self starts to emerge during his high school years, on a hunting trip and in his encounters with friends and others. A climactic episode reveals to him what this life means and opens for him the possibility of a better life.

About the Author

James Quackenbush lives and writes in Michigan. He likes cold beer, hot chicks, fast motorcycles, and hard sudoku. When not engaged in those pursuits, he’s at work on his third novel, Little Do They Know, and a book of miscellaneous essays.
