About the Book

This is the story of fourteen-year-old Todd Whitfield, who in 1866 is stranded on the desolate Kansas prairie, his parents killed by Indians. Alone and lost, only his resourcefulness and grit enable him to survive the many perils of the unsettled plains. Near death, he is finally saved by a wagon supply train on its way to Santa Fe, and is quick to adapt to their hard-living life style. He is befriended by the legendary Bill Hickok, learns the way of gambling, six-guns, saloon life, and grows into manhood a true Westerner of that era.

Though greatly influenced by his surroundings, the early teachings of his parents are not forgotten, and the values they taught stay with him, guiding him towards a future that even they could not have imagined.
