About the Book

On Wednesday, June 1, 2011, many cities and towns in Western and Central Massachusetts were pulverized when several tornadoes touched down. Two of the tornadoes were rated 1.5 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale. The most “severe” tornado, an EF3, carved a 39-mile path of destruction as the wind speeds reached 160 mph and wind gusts up to 70 mph. The aftermath of these tornadoes is horrific. Many lost their homes, belongings, automobiles, and even their planes. Debris was spread throughout the areas affected. Thousands of forested areas were destroyed. Roads became impassable as trees were thrown and uprooted. Wires were draped across lawns and roads leaving thousands of people without any source of power, and sadly four people were killed. It was a horrendous day and a memory that will not soon be forgotten. The rebuilding efforts will be slow, but “we will rebuild” as many say. I have met several people in the aftermath that are inspiring and just so grateful to have survived this day. Volunteers and community involvement has brought a sense of unity for many victims, as well as support, comfort, and relief during this diffi cult time. My heart goes out to all of those that have been affected by the tornadoes, and it is my desire to help contribute to their needs by creating this book.
