Charleston County was a different world from the crowded, violent streets of Chicago. During his year and a half as county sheriff the only major crime committed in the county was an armed robbery of a convenience store out on Highway 17. The state police quickly arrested the perpetrator after the store clerk gave a very accurate description of the pickup truck used in the getaway. The last homicide had been committed six years earlier when a long-distance truck driver caught his wife with another man at a local motel. Ten times that much crime was committed in the Windy City on any given weekend. The job had quickly become routine, predictable, and comfortable. There had been no way of knowing all that was about to change. Chester Hawks thought he had seen it all as a Chicago police officer. Ironically, as the new sheriff of Charleston County, he was about to become involved in one of the most bizarre mysteries he could have ever imagined.
