The next morning we left the hotel in Fort Collins early. I wanted to get as far as I could in the light and that meant through Wyoming. When we hit Laramie the wind was creating ground blizzards and the Hi-way department had closed I-80. They had no estimated time when it would open. I drive a four wheel drive pickup truck just for situations just like this. I’ve lived in the mountains all my life and you cannot predict what the winter weather will do. As the doctors were investigating the food in the truck stop I pulled them aside and told them that in order to make the scheduled class in the morning we would be taking a different route. We would go Northwest through the mountains because the road straight north was also closed. They agreed and we loaded snacks and water in the vehicle. It was just outside town I took a left on a snow covered gravel road and headed into an area with no cell coverage and lots of snow. I kicked it into four wheel drive and baja-ed through the mountains with two friends getting more and more nervous. Every time I would come to a main road it was closed but it did put the doctors’ mind at ease knowing we were in cell range. I had to weave in and out of the mountains and seventeen hours later, around two am we reached my Idaho home.
