About the Author

Gunnar was born in Concord, NH and grew up at Fox State Forest where his Father was the State’s Research Forester. His rowing experience started at St. Paul’s School in Concord and continued at Yale. He coached crew at Browne and Nichols School and then at Moses Browne School in Providence, RI. After marrying Heather in 1973 he taught Math at the high school in Lincoln, NH. After 4 years he started a new career pioneering water efficient toilets. He brought TOTO to the USA in 1990 and helped it grow by teaching about the need for water efficiency to architects. He was inducted into the National Kitchen and Bath Association’s Hall of Fame upon his retirement in 2016. Heather grew up in Wenham, Mass and married Gunnar in 1973, putting together a family with seven children and adding Sarah in 1975! Sarah became an oarswoman and sculler and was the captain of her crew at Tabor Academy. Heather went to college and grad School at UNH where she learned to row in a single scull at the Durham Boat Club coached by her husband. She taught Biology at Plymouth State College in Plymouth, NH. She is a fiber artist and was an active member of Artistic Roots gallery in Plymouth, NH. She has been elected to the NH House of Representatives and serves on numerous committees for the state, county, and town.
