About the Book

I went back to Normandy in 1994 for the 50th Anniversary of D-Day. Meeting many vets and seeing the Norman towns brought back a flood of memories. When Les Ploettner and I joined the others in telling war stories they liked our tales of derring-do by the infamous pair, sometimes known as the “Dauntless Duo.” Some of the wives said that everyone should write their stories for posterity. Upon returning home I began, with Les filling in when my memory failed, to put to paper the stories contained in this book. We both came to the conclusion that teen-agers made up the majority of soldiers in our battery. In this book I try to describe their feelings and how they faced combat and many wacky adventures during World War Two.
