About the Book

IN GOD I TRUST is a short story based on the author's Army career and his tour in Vietnam. It was written on napkins in an NCO Club in two evenings. The story was compiled for an English class in college in 1968. The short story, DEAR MR. PRINCIPAL was written for a Sociology class in college in 1969. It depicts the southern mentality concerning the race situation during that period of the author's life. The poems are derived from the author's experiences and thoughts over a period of time. As the words for a poem came to him he scribbled them on scrap pieces of paper and later typed them.

About the Author

The two short stories and various poems were written by Kirby N. Rabalais, Jr. The stories were written in college right after he came back from the war in Vietnam. He was a medic, was shot down on the battlefield, and sent back to the states for recovery. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star medals. IN GOD I TRUST was written in the Army and DEAR MR. PRINCIPAL was written after he got out of the service. The poem THANKS TO HIM was written in 1969 when he was at Alvin Jr. College and THE FOG was written in 1990 after he recovered from Alcoholism. The poems between these two were just a few of the verses he scribbled on scrap pieces of paper over the years. There are more in existence but they are in boxes packed away somewhere. Kirby is '67 years old now. He is a born again Christian who is blessed with a loving family. His life has turned out " better than he could have hoped for" when he passed out on the battlefield thinking "this is how it feels to die. It isn't so bad after all."
