About the Book

Nichole Lynn Adams is a beautiful young wife and mother who becomes addicted to gambling. Living in rural Iowa, Nichole is a lonely housewife who yearns for her hometown--Detroit, Michigan. She spends much of her time alone. Her two children, a boy and a girl are in grade school. On the weekends they spend their time at their grandmother's house (Nichole's mother-in-law). Nichole's husband travels extensively for his job. Out of boredom, Nichole takes it upon herself to frequent one of the many Indian-run casinos. While at the casino she meets a lonely old lady, Thelma, and they fast become friends. Recently widowed, Thelma Metuski, left with a significant inheritance, has also fallen into the clutches of compulsive gambling. She still grieves for her husband Stanley and misses her two grown sons. Her (neighbor) friend recently moved to Florida. Thelma's in poor health. While visiting the casino, Nichole and Thelma become acquainted with an unscrupulous man--another compulsive gambler, named Daniel Edward Waters. He is single, but has an ex-wife and two children. Daniel has amassed many problems, most of which are due to his gambling. He has trouble hanging onto girlfriends, and he has a drinking problem. Daniel eventually lands in jail. But, not before he tries to involve Nichole in one of his devious schemes. Thelma innocently becomes involved. Nichole's casino excursions create many disastrous events. She has a run-in with a casino security guard, and ends up visiting a pawnshop. She lies to creditors, her children, and her husband. She overdraws the checking account and even ends up unwittingly writing a check on a closed account. One of the most heart-rending events is when Nichole's husband, Frank, tires of her casino excursions and leaves her, taking the children with him. And, she is forced into seeking employment. Before her suicidal thoughts triumph Nichole seeks help for her compulsive gambling. But, she doesn't seek help until after she loses her friend, Thelma.
