All through history, societies have organized themselves around feudal systems that allocate scarce resources. The drive to increase resources has produced endless warfare over scarce resources. The invention of production 300 years ago holds out the promise of eliminating the condition of scarce resources and thus the incessant warfare they leave in their wake. The prosperity production produces has since touched the lives of perhaps a billion people, providing them with comforts beyond the reach of even the Roman emperors of yore. Yet, instead of seizing with pride on our ability to create what doesn’t exist so that we can expand prosperity to all, we are embarrassed by what we have and feel guilty in the face of others who have yet to experience our production based prosperity. Our challenge is to expand our prosperity to the world, but if we do not revere it, if we do not see it for what it is, a blessing to humanity, if we continue to ridicule it and think of it as spiritually barren, we risk not only failing in our noble mission to relieve the ills of humanity, we risk losing our own prosperity and the freedom it produces.
