About the Book

Preacher is a funny, powerful, moving and readable novel of one young man’s coming of age in the military. The novel moves swiftly, the voice is authentic and piercing. . . a beautiful work of art.

- Bret Lott, author of Jewel

Milton Stanley brings to his writing a broad arsenal of talents, including a fresh and lively prose style, a great exuberance of imagination, a nice ironic take on the world and its foibles, and enough quirky good humor to make his work original.

- W. D. Wetherell, author of North of Now

Preacher is the quirky coming-of-age story of Jason Sain, a 19-year old Tennessee National Guardsman terrified by the prospect of dying in Operation Desert Shield. As his unit prepares to leave for the Middle East, Jason decides to get out of the military. His plan, at first, seems simple: fake insanity by, at strategic moments, imitating the frenzied, hell-fire delivery of his father, a fervent mountain preacher in East Tennessee. But Jason’s plans go wrong from the start and his machination takes on a life of its own.
