About the Book

Synergy is a romantic comedy that with humor depicts the world view clashes that occur when an attractive, wealthy, female entrepreneur from Orange County California, named Fila Enderby, contracts with a dedicated Buddhist social activist/folksinger, named Rolf Nordquist, to father a child in order to satisby the demands of her father´s will.  

It also depicts the culture shock that occurs to the Enderby family when a friend/teacher of the folksinger, a young Tibetan Lama named Lama Tsot Rinpoche, comes to live with them to set up a Tibetan Buddhist Center at the command of the Dalai Lama.

The conflict in the story occurs when Fila´s obsession to become the Chief Executive Officer of her dying father´s company at any cost including her personal life and Rolf´s life goal of social activism and dedication to remaining free from any binding relationship or material grasping in conformance with his Tibetan Buddhist beliefs become compromised.  Because of their agreement to produce a child both start doing things contrary to their natures.  Rolf finds himself practising the very business practices he had escaped from fifteen years earlier when his successful father disowned him for choosing Tibetan Buddhism over his insurance empire.  Fila finds herself becoming more and  more concerned about her growing fetus and her relationship with Rolf than with her business goals.

In the meantime Geoffrey Enderby, Fila´s dying father, has his belief system challenged by Lama Tsot, Fila has her business confidence shaken by Rolf´s business talent, and Enderby Developments is being restructured into more socially responsible business practices.  As well, Fila´s disturbed Brother Drew is being thwarted, Drew´s wife, Daphne finds her illusions about relationships vastly altering and Orange County is getting a Tibetan Buddhist Center.

About the Author

Rosemary I. Patterson, Ph.D. is a retired School Psychologist whose interests include Identity Achievement (who am I and what am I going to do with my life) in Adolescence. After a visit to Hawaii in 1988 she hypothesized that the Identity Achievement task would be more complicated in a multi-cultural population. The result has been five novels dealing with Identity Achievement in Hawaii. The other four novels include “An End To Innocence,” set in Hilo, “Aloha And MaiTais,” about Honolulu entertainers in the 1930's, “Kuhina Nui,” about King Kamehameha’s favorite wife, and “Kula Keiki Ali’i,” about the Chief’s Children’s School that in 1840 educated the children who would become monarchs of Hawaii.
