MARS SETTLEMENTS-Chapter 1: The Pioneers It is the year 2014. Earth has suffered years of war and famine. Biological weapons continue to wreak havoc, yet the populations grow. One thousand pioneers are sent aboard the space ship Magellan to attempt exploration of Mars. Its autocratic captain and his crony, Chaplain Billy White, come to odds with the civilian crew of scientists and support perssonel. In an act of desperation, a crewman murders the captain. Enraged and vindictive, the chaplain takes command of the space ship and orders the crew to abandon the eight hundred helpless pioneers to their fate on the hostile surface of Planet Mars
