“Chicago is the product of its neighborhoods. The majority of them are integrated; some are not. When out-of-towners visit this huge city today and see persons of all races and creeds walking unmolested in most areas, they may have no idea of the pain and suffering attendant to this racial mix. I am a 76 year old Black citizen who wrote this memoir in order to paint a picture for both myself and the reader of the history of Black migration to the city of Chicago before and during the Second World War.”

About the Author

Vernon B. Williams III is a senior citizen and a life long Chicagoan. He grew up on the south side, went to college and earned a Masters Degree in Public Administration, joined the Chicago Police Department and retired as a Sergeant in 1993, after 36 years of dedicated service. He is an avid golfer, duplicate bridge player, amateur artist and musician, private security licensee and journal writer. The journal writing began when he and his wife, Mykei joined a journal writing class at the Chicago Cultural Center in 1999. For lack of a better subject, he started writing about his police experiences. His initial writings were praised and encouraged by his classmates and also his teacher and mentor, Ms. Elinor B. Perry. This book is a compendium of Vernon’s writings.
