About the Book

Today, escalating costs of health care, long waits for medical services, the shortage of competent health care providers, and the increase of patient consumerism are some of the challenges facing health care systems´ leaders across the world. These challenges stand in health care leaders´ way to meet consumers´ health needs and expectations. Effective use of ICT can help address these challenges. In the Canadian health system however, ICT investments have not addressed these challenges successfully. For instance, Canada has a reputation to trail internationally when it comes to timely access to care. ICT inability to shorten wait times in the Canadian health system suggests that wait times are symptom of structural and cultural problems that need to be addressed. A transformation of the Canadian health system is therefore required. Such transformation should result in putting patient at the center of the health system as it has been the desire of Canadian citizens. ICT should play a crucial role in this regard. In this book, a new health system model is presented. The proposed model has the potential to achieve a desirable equilibrium among accessibility to care, health costs, and quality of care.
