Uttering expletively in Japanese he ran into the kitchen, apparently hoping to find a member of his staff who could speak English to the nuisance foreign customers. This, Liz thought, would be a good time to dine and dash, because she had already checked out the bill and the tab came up to a whopping 57,000 yen! She had almost screamed. It must have been some party! She said to Stephanie in a loud whisper “Hey, we have to blow this joint.” Stephanie was looking scared. “You mean…we should…leave?” Liz got heated. “Just walk slowly toward the door, don’t run, just quicken the pace…” Stephanie said “B-but we can’t just leave, can we? What about the others?” Liz snapped and strained to speak in a quiet but loud enough voice “…hey, you do what you wanna do, I’m getting the hell out of here.” The Diner Manager reemerged from the swinging doors of the kitchen, just as Liz made tracks for the exit, Stephanie followed quickly behind…

About the Author
LOCK CEE MANGUM’s unique storytelling capacity and love for creative expression was nurtured and refined while growing up on the streets of Raleigh-Durham and New York City. His interest in international studies prompted his extensive travels in Asia and Latin America. As an off-and-on resident of Japan for over twenty years, he was a language instructor of English and Spanish and holds a CELTA from the Royal Society of Arts from Cambridge. He graduated from Long Island University.
