About the Author
Vinton A. Dearing is an emeritus Professor of English at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he taught and practiced computer programming and textual criticism and editing for forty years. A pioneer in computer programming in literary studies, he produced several concordances. This book supersedes his two previous books on textual criticism and includes computer programs for doing the work. The methodology develops the insights of Sir Walter Greg and Archibald A. Hill who built on the work of the nineteenth-century biblical scholar Karl A. Lachmann. The computer programs in the book make it possible to apply the methodology to biblical texts as well as others which have many manuscripts and printed editions.
