About the Book
Did you get the gitters when asked to write a paragraph or an essay? Then this book is for you. It is the answer to your gitters and it will help to alleviate that problem. The purpose of this text is to help students practice and write different types of paragraphs effectively in good axiomatic English. In detail, it discusses some of the different types of paragraphs- Illustration, Narration, Description, Process and Analysis, Classification, Definition, Comparison, Contrast, Comparison and Contrast, Cause and Effect, and Argumentation, and their primary characteristics-unity, coherence, balance, voice, grammar and mechanics, clarity, point of view, audience, cadence and style. It emphasizes also some secondary characteristics - pre-writing, practice, patience, sentence structure, main idea (topic sentence), word choice, conciseness, audience, reading aloud, reading, and feedback-- to help cement a good, well-written paragraph. Additionally, examples (models) and appropriate and relevant assignments follow each type of paragraph. Further, it highlights some common mistakes (red flags) which mar good writing. Finally, it suggests ways to generate ideas to speedily write the paragraph and reduce the student's anxiety. In sum, it is a holistic approach in writing the different paragraphs since each has a different technique of development.
