About the Book
Bobby Lee Jordan, famous televangelist, is living in sin with Heromine Pope. He refuses to marry her and keeps her in the b.g.of his career as the star of the Glass Stadium, a Cathedral made of glass and steel in Cleveland. Margaret Mosley, a destitute born-again Christian gives Bobby every cent she has Her son Matt threatens to kill Bobby. Bobby gets a surprise visit from the Archbishop of Cleveland who is advised by his controversial mentor, Bishop Booth, who has made a reputation for himself by debunking the Bible.
Joan Smith. a hillbilly girl in Tennessee, has spoken to God and he has told her the world is rotten. He plans to end it all. The Archbishop wants Bobby to join him along with Cardinal Tetracini from Rome in an examination of the girl to be held at the High Episcopal Cathedral in New York. That’s when the fun begins. The three church leaders can’t agree about anything and once the news gets out, the media descend and society is thrown into a tailspin.
Joan confesses that God has not only announced that he is coming back but he will arrive the following Friday to give the workers a break. “T G I F” will have a new meaning. The gay Jewish press agent, Nathan decides to sell tickets when he finds out that God will come down in Madison Square Garden The Prophets of Doom who have been carrying their “Repent or Perish” signs become ticket scalpers.
Ursala Darnell, a Greenwich Village hooker ends up taking in Theresa, an ex-nun whom she went to school with. And Theresa who has been disillusioned by the convent wants to give Ursala a chance to cut back on her sins.---one man at a time. Society however, has no time to waste on such an idle pursuit. The stock market is rising---corporations are merging. When the big night arrives--- Matt ,who has run away from his mother, shows up prepared to assassinate Bobby. Joan finally confesses that she twisted the truth. Matt shoots Bobby. He ends up in a hospital---decides to go into politics. What has changed is our concept of God----it took 2000 years to figure it out.
About the Author
Norman Spencer Graham has moved through two other media before he approached the novel. His MFA in Theater helped him write and see mounted five of his plays. The titles of his plays are ARABESQUE, LEGEND OF THE SUN, AN EVENING WITH PRACTICALLY EVERYBODY, AN APPETITE FOR JADE and RETURN ENGAGEMENT. He has also written five original screenplays. NIGHT OF THE SERPENT (cult horror film) THE RAGPICKER, NEVER LOOK BACK, MONDO EROTICA and ONCE UPON A SCOUNDREL Mr. Graham believes the stage gave him an insight into dialogue and the screen---a feeling for structure. Armed with these experiences, approaching the novel was less daunting. A CRYING SHAME is his fifth novel. He has also written DEATH IN GUATEMALA, THE FINAL OBSCENITY THE END .COM, and EYE OF LUCIFER.
