About the Book

Last Hindu Fortress is a novel about the prophecy of the Sage of the Indus and about India’s 1947 Partition Holocaust. It is the first in a series of autobiographical novels. This fictional narrative portrays with haunting poignancy two families through two generations at the British India’s strategic north-west frontier, where Hindus constitute a small minority, which has a share of disproportionate wealth and political power. However, they live precariously in a region engulfed in social and political turmoil during the decade of struggle for India’s independence in the 1940s. On the eve of India’s Independence and Partition, the fortress community comes under siege lasting more than a week. The lengthy and compelling saga of the fortress community ends in increasing violence and attack, signaling ominous signs of the imminent destruction of the Hindu Fortress. Nandan has transformed a tragic and extraordinary historic event into a unique and evocative literary work that is timely and bound to resonate.
