About the Book

A third generation peace officer, GIDEON PIKE lives for his work, his family and his new bride.  He soon becomes California’s most celebrated crime investigator.

His parents and wife are killed when a long-time cocaine user decides to end his life by driving headlong into their car on a Los Angeles freeway.  The loss drives Gideon into a dark depression.

For weeks his adopted brother, BOONE BOWERS, a superior detective in his own right, patiently cares for Gideon until he’s capable of returning to the work he loves.

Shortly after recovering from the tragedy, Gideon Pike gains even greater attention when he leads an area-wide police strike that destroys JIMMY O’BANNON’S plan to monopolize the nation’s narcotic trade.

Now the life-long dream of the West Coast kingpin is shattered.  He will never become “Boss of Bosses” in America’s crime world.  Enraged and half-mad, he orders Pike killed and his hitmen make three attempts.  Each comes closer.

Fearing that O’Bannon’s thugs will ultimately succeed, Chief of Detectives, TIMOTHY DELANEY sends his prize investigator to the remote Northern Plains.  He is to wait there until O’Bannon, who has also gone into hiding, is captured.

Gideon Pike has now been denied everything in his life that has meaning.  He drives aimlessly around the strange land that is so different from his beloved Los Angeles.  Then he happens upon a small idyllic South Dakota Town.  There he falls in love with KATE COOLRIGE, an expatriate from New York City.

Jimmy O’Bannon’s rage from failing to have Pike killed drives the crime boss deeper into insanity.  He is convinced that Gideon is possessed with supernatural powers.  He employs VIGGO KROCOW; a renegade cop turned hitman to uncover Pike’s hiding place.

Using methods he learned as a cop, Krocow succeeds in locating Gideon’s sanctuary.  He follows him there to make good his million-dollar contract.
