About the Book

SHAKESPEARE REDUX is a poem for poem response to Shakespeare's Sonnets, on his own terms. A perspective of four hundred years, the nuances and variations between Elizabethan and American English, the playfulness at the heart of this venture, and the delightful restrictions of form are all part and parcel of this collection of little songs, then and now. I'm happy to have escaped this mano a mano relatively unscarred.

"For a Shakespearean, for anyone really familiar with the Sonnets, these are fascinating, at once fine poems in themselves and keen commentaries/readings of Shakespeare's work."

Sidney Homan,
University of Florida

"Here we have a rarity: a high level of energy and wit sustained throughout an entire collection. Lyall knows his sources and craft so well he bring us again and again into a wild state of play in which the comic muse is the antic child of wisdom."

James Hoggard,
Poet Laureate of Texas, 2000

About the Author

About the author: Larry Lyall is a poet, musician and occasional professor of literature and the humanities. He is the author of SHAKESPEARE REDUX, a sonnet for sonnet response to Shakespeare's famous sequence, THE SHORTER DECAMERON, a Petrarchan gloss on Boccaccio's classic. Watch for his forthcoming CALLEJONEADAS/ALLEY SONGS, an irreverent, often truthful, account of a decade spent in the provinces of Mexico. He lives in Gainesville, Florida.
