About the Book

In present-day New York City, David Lane, an attorney, is asked to represent a police officer who has shot and killed an unarmed man. This new client causes David to reconsider his own experiences as a police officer with the Dallas, Texas Police Department. In 1992, David, an Army reservist, arrived back in Dallas after having been called to active duty for the Persian Gulf War. From the time he landed at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, his return is like nothing he had expected. His reunion with his girlfriend, Charlene, became a circus. While his fellow officers gave him a warm welcome at the police station, in the months that he has been gone huge political changes have rocked the patrol bureau and the rest of the department. The business of being a mid-level drug dealer brought Andree Jamison to David’s part of Dallas. Andree’s two main professional challenges revolved around establishing a new product line in town and to determining the cause of a revenue shortfall in his organization. Rookie Bill Cobb started working the overnight, or deep nights, shift at David’s police station. He found himself patrolling the area Andree considered his own. Bill found his first several nights of patrol work challenging in unexpected ways. Holly Dawn Snyder danced at an upscale strip joint. Shortly before being activated for war service, David had done her a good turn. Upon his return, he ran across a grateful Holly Dawn. The two of them strike up a renewed, yet platonic, relationship. The novel follows these characters over the course of only a few days worth of police work. During that time, circumstances forced David to decide if he would accept the new challenges of a changed department. Charlene and Holly Dawn made for complications in his life that he could have done without. Andree was faced with the tough decisions required of a leader in his field. Would Bill be able to handle, or even survive, police work? The decisions and experiences of each character impacted the lives of the others, whether they had met or not. After a terrifying act of violence, the lives of these characters never returned to normal. In present day New York and Texas, the echos of that violent time are still affecting the survivors.
