About the Book
Gene Weisberger's latest book is a photo essay of southeastern England from where he and his travel partner Joe Burros recently returned.
The story begins when Gene questions whether he will be able to travel again after his recent illnesses. He takes us on a trial run through New York, his home city.
Then we go with Joe and him to choose the route and they share with us the decision to go to southeast England. Now the traveling begins as we visit two famous gardens: Painshill Park and Leonardslee. Soon he takes us to the resort city of Brighton where Gene introduces us to new friends he meets while looking for a bench outside of Brighton’s Royal Pavilion. Gene seems to have an ability to meet people wherever he goes.
When we are not meeting people we are experiencing exciting places of interest, as we go to the edge of a little known cliff called Beachy Head. There, Gene reminds us how risky life can be.
Then we will begin to learn English history from the days when Julius Caesar landed on the British Isles in
54 B. C. We spend a day studying the ways of the Romans who, we are reminded, stayed in England for over four hundred years; a longer period of time than America has been a colonized nation.
From there we have our next history lesson at the battlefield near Hastings where in the year 1066, King William, and his army crossed the English Channel to vanquish the old British rule under King Harold. So began the rule of the Normans in Britain and the age of castle building. We stand with Gene at the battlefield, remembering how even before the advent of gunpowder and atomic energy, wars could be so brutal.
We learn of more English history, as we visit Lavenham, a town where in the seventeenth century, began the age of the industrial revolution and to Cambridge with its magnificent university
In addition to the fun and excitement of experiencing English history, the book is filled with pictures he took; of castles like Bodiam and Leeds; of medieval ruins and ancient walls; of modern gardens and seaport condos.
