Chapter 6 Just after midday and Mason sat at the table with his oldest boy, watching him eat as if he hadn’t eaten in days. “You should drink some more water son.” A statement reminiscent of the days when Anthony was that sparkle in his eyes, running to him, jumping into his arms when he came home from work and always excited to see his father. Mason watched him now a man. A man grown and too old to be this confused. Mason said the same thing to him then, “son drink more water.” His thoughts led him to wonder of all the things he told him, tried to teach him. The things he learned from his uncles growing up. Things that helped him to be a man, but that one thing that echoed in the back of his head while watching his oldest child eat without drinking one sip of water was “son you need to drink more water.” “You know son, the one thing I had the most trouble with was getting you to drink more water.” Anthony looked up from his plate just slightly, “Huh?” “I tell you, you would play and play and play, all day outside, inside, your feet never stopped moving. You might stop to eat something, but you were never thirsty it seems.” He went back to his plate of eggs and oatmeal. Mason stood from the table, went into the kitchen and got the tallest glass he could find and filled it with water from the refrigerator, no ice. Bringing it back to the table he sat it down in front of Anthony’s plate. “Here son, you should drink more water.” Anthony paused, but didn’t look up. He knew his father. He knew when his father was gearing up for a lecture. Always the teacher he couldn’t help himself. So he waited for it. He waited for the ‘son there comes a time in every man’s life,’ or ‘there’s a time to play and a time to grow up’ or something of that nature. But this time, nothing. He only looked at his son who waited for him to preach, and nothing.

We all see a bit of ourselves in our children in a lot of the things they do—from the good to the bad, when they succeed and when they fail. In a sense, one might believe that to teach our children right from wrong, we are indeed teaching those same lessons to ourselves—as the saying goes, “to point a finger only to have three more pointing back at you.” Follow Mason Broady, a man long in years and experience, for a weekend while searching for some sort of sustenance from his own days alone. He finds himself now a widower, and routine is losing its flavor. Until by happenstance, he runs into an old from friend from a good while ago who will remind him that he is very much alive. Follow his family, his children, and grandchildren being a reflection of who he is and who he was. They too would have to navigate life’s intricacies, its hills, and valleys with the sort of questioning that would force an individual to either scream for an answer or fall to silence from simply not knowing. They’ll learn it’s okay not knowing sometimes. But still, in the end, they are a family—sometimes loving one another and sometimes not so much. They are still a family. A reflection of one another or, as Mason Broady would say, “a reflection of me.”
About the Author
Taking to writing as a form of escape, Sidney Mason has been a bit of a story teller since he enjoyed day-dreaming as a little boy. Often telling himself stories at night until his eye fell heavy, this would become a vice of his throughout his young life and on into adulthood where he learned to channel his own successes and failures, barriers and triumphs into words. In every word from the aura of every character, he becomes the character on paper. Realizing this could be anyone from the woman who works in the school cafeteria to the man who politely thought to nod hello in passing on the street.
