About the Book

Choices, have you really thought about the results that evolve from the choices you make?  Do you honestly think about how many lives will be affected from just one little choice?  Overall, my book deals with problems concerning black males. Problems concluding from good or bad choices they have made.  Although none of my main characters are brothers by blood, I defined them brothers by their ethnicity and location.  I have decided on the name Brother Why? because I was asking them, as black men, why they do some of the things they do, and why they say some of the things they say.  Brother Why? Book One, circles around the lives of five black families coming up in the ghetto of Houston, TX beginning in 1928.  (This novels begins in year 1928, but it is written in year 1997 and up dialect.  The reason being, I hate reading books about my people, based in the past, and I have to keep rereading it to understand what exactly is going on.  I have patience to do that, because I get in to whatever I am reading, but I dont know too many other people with the same patience.  I want my book to be read, remembered, and talked about.)   They deal with racism, and one of my characters loses his younger brother in a hate crime.   At the funeral, the five friends friendship is tested again, but they overcome it in the end.   Brother Why?  focuses on the lives of their bloodlines throughout the year 1997.  However, choices the younger generations grandfathers made back in the past determined the way their lives ended up.  That story continues in Brother Why 2  Cycles Are Hard To Break.  At the tail end of the depression, my characters all agree on the fact they desire something better for themselves in the future.  They want to get far away from the poverty-stricken neighborhoods they are now forced to live in and be respected by not only black people but white people also.  Even though that seemed to be a pipe dream at that moment, four out of the five boys will try nothing but their best to accomplish their far out goals.  My fifth character, which looks upon hard work as a plague, wants to have things but wants them quick and in a hurry; therefore, he goes the negative route to achieve his goals.  It is a proven fact nothing positive comes from negativity.  After the fallen friend falls from grace, the strong friendship and love will no doubt be tested for a second time.  Yet, the fading of their love for one another will never become an issue, because internally and externally they view each other as genuine brothers.  Due to the negative choices Lamar makes, his offsprings and their offsprings will suffer from it just like he did.  The closure of the book results in the lost of one of my main characters life.  What hurts the long time allies more than anything is 1, the perpetrator is a member of his immediate family and 2, they have told, warned, and tried their best to help him get out of the hood, where all his troubles lay.  He wanted to live the fast life, and he had to suffer the consequences of it too.

This is the main ideal and focus of the entire novel, BUT writing about this one and only subject would have bored me to death, and nine out of ten readers also, especially since books and movies concerning that nature have been written hundreds and hundreds of times.  So, I gave each boy, well family, their own set of problems and issues.  Cooley, he can never, ever see himself with a woman of his own color, and he would think you crazy for even making such a suggestion.    Roy Earl, he can not see why he has to stay around and help support his child, since he never wanted it anyway.   Marcus, he loves men but will never tell anyone.  So, his entire life is a big lie and full of deception.  Lamar, he is just as lazy as the day is long, and he can not see w
