About the Book

Footsteps in a New World is a story that describes what it might have been like to establish a homestead in 17th century Maryland. Moreover, it answers questions as to what factors might have compelled such an adventure into an unknown world. Adhering to historical accounts of the founding of Maryland while exploring family history, fact and fiction merge to become an inspiring tale of a young man’s dream of land, freedom, and family. Tomas Sympson traveled from Scotland in 1635 with the intention of settling in the Roman Catholic colony of Maryland. He left footprints in time that, in discovering, perhaps we shall take heart, to achieve and to pursue what is our own American Dream.

About the Author

Lisa Keuhlen is a home-schooling mother of four boys and has been married to a Naval Aviator for twenty-three years. A graduate of St. Mary’s High School in Annapolis, she unknowingly drove by the “old plantation” and her family’s 300 year old roots as she traveled to and from NC State University in Raleigh. Having crisscrossed the country and the world she came “home” to southern Maryland to explore her family’s roots and discovered the fascinating history of the founding of Maryland and the inspiring stories of extraordinarily ordinary kin folk who established the heart of this place.
