About the Book
Leon Lazarus´ intriguing memoir begins in 1919, the year of his birth in New York City and ends in June, 1944, with Leon as a twenty-three-year-old corporal aboard the San Antonio Rose, a B-24 bomber heading for an Army Air Force Base somewhere in southern Italy. Anecdotal in style, a book about growing up and coming of age, it is also the story of the author´s East Bronx neighborhood as it makes its tremulous passage through The Roaring Twenties, The Great Depression, the outbreak of World War II and how these turbulent events shaped and transformed the lives of its people.
