About the Book
This memoir is an amalgam of the early life and education of a boy born in the depression era, though not greatly affected by it, educated first at Harvard University then the University of Buffalo College of Medicine, followed by residency appointments at the University of Chicago, the National Institutes of Health and Stanford University. His professional career was spent at the University of Florida as a professor of surgery, the chief of a general surgery service and the founder of the state’s first transplantation program. The book is also a description of the growth and development of his family chronologically linked with his career, thus a history of his wife and children and of his contemporaries in the medical school, the two facets of his life that were complementary. He also comments on the evolution in medicine that has occurred during his watch.
