The plane was bound for Rome and the plan was to return to Italy to search for works of art. It was a plan to locate certain missing paintings and smuggle them to the US. To this day, there are many works of art that are unaccounted for, buried in old villas of Rome and in summer houses. History recorded their existence for a brief moment and then they vanished.
